How do you snack in Korea? You don't have to book the next flight to Seoul to find that out. Here at getDigital, you have the opportunity to get to know Korean candy traditions without even leaving the house! For everyone who would like to step into international snack territory and try some things out, we have a varation of different Korean sweets and drinks – and this is one of them! :)
Yakgwa is a very traditional snack: In Korea, this sweet used to be enjoyed during Chuseok, the Korean harvest festival during September or October. Chuseok is one if the two most important festivals in Korea (the other one being Korean New Year, which is celebrated in January or February). Chuseok is also an occasion to remember deceased relatives, which sometimes manifests in a little altar on which the Yakgwa is symbolically prepared. Therefore, Yakgwa reminds many Koreans of family gatherings like this.
Its name means something along the lines of "medicinal confectionery", because it used to be produced with a lot of honey and honey was seen as a medicine in ancient Korea.
Today, this cake-like candy can be bought all year round, not only in autumn. It's very sweet, which is why it is often enjoyed as a side snack at tea time.
