In Princess Mononoke, the cursed prince Ashitaka gets into a fierce battle between spirits, animals and humans on his way through the country. The prince undertakes his journey on the back of Yakul, his faithful mount, which resembles an antelope. Why an antelope? Director Hayao Miyazaki wanted to avoid Ashitaka resembling a samurai too much, so he decided against a horse as a mount. Much to Ashitaka's advantage, because unlike ordinary horses, Yakul can dive and jump exceptionally high.
