Monty Python and The Holy Grail has long been part of general education and not just nerdy topics. Some jokes, however, are especially present in nerd circles. Such as the famous scene in which the Knights of the Round Coconut… er…Table want to cross the Bridge of Death!
Guarded bridges seem to have a special significance in this film. One of them, for example, is guarded by the particularly heroic Black Knight. He is a serious opponent, although easily defeated by a skilled fighter like Arthur. The ugly creature in front of the Bridge of Death, however, is a different matter. If you don’t answer all three questions correctly, you are immediately thrown into the deadly abyss. Even a question about your favourite colour might be answered incorrectly if you’re slightly nervous.
So the Doormat What is your name is the perfect way to weed out unwanted visitors at your door. If they don’t know the cult film, they can turn back, while others can try answering the three questions on the mat correctly. Hopefully you yourself are a bit smarter than the bridge guard in the film and know that the question is about a European! swallow. It normally moves at a speed of about 32.4 km/h. Answers up to 74 km/h can also be considered correct, as individual swallows have actually been measured at such a speed. Whether you allow other answers, and if so which ones, is up to you ;).
By the way, the fact that the doormat is made of coconut fibre is not (only) a funny allusion to the non-existent horses of the knights. Just like Arthur, coconut fibre is particularly resistant and always maintains its posture even under great strain. This mat is thus suitable for both indoors and outdoors. Unfortunately, however, it is only available in coconut brown and not in blue.
