Description

  • Draw working circuits directly on paper with the Circuit Scribe. Conductive ink makes it possible: With various modules like LED lamps, switches, transistors, and resistors: The modules have magnetic feet to fix them on the steel plate which is put under the paper with the circuit: Four different sets available: four with varying numbers of modules, one only with pen, LED and batteries.

The Circuit Scribe does what its name says: it lets you draw circuit diagrams on paper... that work as real circuits! That means you can, for example, connect a battery and a lamp and ‘hey presto!' you have a new source of light.

And that's just the first step, accessories enable many other opportunities.

Circuit Scribe is a Kickstarter project made by a PhD student team from the University of Illinois. Circuit Scribe was developed for education and is recommended for ages 13 and up.

How does it work?

The basic function of the Circuit Scribe is simple but ingenious: The ball-point ink pen looks like an ordinary pen, but it's filled with conductive silver ink (silver is the element with the highest electrical conductivity). This way, you're able to draw circuits on a normal sheet of paper and they will be conductive! Just add the power...

There is no need for added cables all over the place, and to keep all the elements of the circuit in their right places set (except Lite) contains a steel plate, which is placed under the paper and has magnetic feet to hold the plate. This makes it really easy to change the circuit or to create a new one. All you need is a new sheet of paper :). To create proper-fitting connections at the right distances, the sets (except Lite) come with a stencil to help create perfect round connections. How all this works can best be seen in the video on the left.

The kits
You can do more with the Circuit Scribe than just light a bulb. The different basic kits contain various equipment and open many possibilities for experimenting.

Lite
If you want to start easy and if you're looking for a present to make other constructors curious, how about the Lite kit? It contains the pen with silver-ink, x1 Bi-LED and 2 x 3 V coin cells. To close the circuit, fold one corner of the paper sheet and you get a simple switch. Or, just use your finger as a conductor :).

Every kit (besides Lite) contains:

- a pen with silver ink, lasting for 60-80 metres of circuit
- !!!a steel plate which works as base behind the paper with the circuit to hold the magnetic elements!!!

- a 9-volt battery incl. short-circuit protection
- a stencil for drawing accurate connections
- stickers with some space for labelling to make a clear circuit diagram

Basic
The Basic kit with x11 pieces has everything you need for different settings and experiments. In addition to the regular basics, it contains:

- 2 x Bi-LEDs The Bi-LED lights blue or red, depending on which way the electricity passes through. Just turn it around to change the colour.
- 1 x SPST Switch The Single Pole Single Throw switch works just like a light switch and lets you switch the circuit on and off.
- 1 x 2-Pin Adapter This adapter makes it possible to use resistors, capacitors and contactors. The set includes 5 different resistors, 1 photoresistor which reacts to light and 2 different capacitors.
- 1 x NPN Transistor, which works as a switch and as an amplifier.
- 1 x Manual in English, which explains all the functions.

Basic with book

This kit adds to the Basic kit an additional book. The book provides detailed information and instructions, like patterns for circuits. Make your own notes on the added blank pages. English edition.

Maker

The Maker set contains additionally to the basic equipment:

- 2 x Bi-LEDs
- 1 x RGB-LED This LED lights red, green or blue depending on the used connection. Combine them to create new colours!
- 1 x Buzzer The Buzzer plays a 4 kHz tone. The volume depends on the voltage – change it to adjust the sound.
- 1 x SPST Switch
- 1 x Photo Sensor This photo transistor allows you to create light-dependent circuits. The more light on the sensor means more output. How about building an alarm clock that reacts to the first light of the morning with the photo sensor and the buzzer?
- 1 x Potentiometer A potentiometer works as a variable resistor. Adjust the output with the turning knob to control other modules like LEDs or motors.
- 1 x Blinker The Blinker turns a direct current input into a square wave output, which means it delivers the power periodically. That's good for letting LEDs blink and buzzers beep.
- 1 x 2-Pin Adapter
- 1 x NPN Transistor

All the modules can be seen on the photos. You also can buy single modules and expand your circuits. We have some modules for beginner and some for advanced experts. The pen can be bought separately too, if you need new ink (but don't worry, the pen lasts for a good period and many circuits).

Circuit Scribe makes it possible to work with extra accuracy and clear arrangement without the help of any pliers or wire cutters. That's useful while teaching but also for geeks who like it organized ;). In contrast to messy cables, it looks really good!

Even if you're a friend of chaos, you'll still like Circuit Scribe! Just doodle your diagram with all the quirky loop ways you like. And you don't have to limit it to one DIN A4.

One piece of information for the anxious: Amazingly, the paper doesn't get heated through the circuit, and so it won't catch fire. :)
